The rare nesting bird of the peninsula is the southern long-eared owl, but the singer and manna cicadas, which fill summer evenings with their loud chirping, also live here. Historic relics of the peninsula are also outstanding. Tihany is one of the sacred places of Hungary. 3.day – Hiking around Balaton Uplands National Park

Today we will discover more beauties of the Balaton Uplands National Park. The area of 56 997 hectares of the Balaton Uplands National Park mainly consists of these six landscape protection areas: Kis-Balaton, Keszthely Hills, Tapolca Basin, Káli Basin, Pécsely Basin and Tihany Peninsula. The special feature of these regions of the Balaton Uplands is that they are treated as though they belonged to the Mediterranean.
During our todays hiking we will reach Hegyestű with its spectacular view! Often called as the gatekeeper of Káli-medence (Káli Basin), this basalt frustum was not only shaped by nature, but also by the mining of basalt. The hill shows a proper cone shape viewed from the direction of Lake Balaton. The northern part of the hill has been quarried, however, the remaining nearly 50-metre high mine-wall reveals the inside of the basalt volcano which was active 8 million years ago. The stiff lava in the crater of the volcano during the stiffening process split up into several vertical polygonal columns. This sight is unique in Hungary and it is a rare spectacle also in Europe.
In the afternoon dirive back to the hotel. Free time with possibility to use the wellness area of the hotel.
